Why do some sweatshirts have a triangular design at the neckline?
This dates back to 1920. The first sweatshirt was conceived by Benjamin Russell Jr., a football player at the University of Alabama in the U.S. Tired of the itchy and uncomfortable jerseys that caused irritation when he sweated, he proposed the idea of switching to an absorbent, all-cotton design to his father, the founder of Russell Athletic Co. These new sweatshirts were subsequently born and gained popularity. These sweatshirts were not only comfortable but also extremely durable!
The triangle at the neckline is a feature designed to enhance durability. An extra layer of fabric, typically made from elastic ribbed material, is used to reinforce the collar, preventing it from stretching or losing its shape due to frequent movement and pulling on or off. Additionally, this area is prone to showing triangular sweat stains after exercise, so sewing on an extra piece of fabric helps with sweat absorption while looking better. Gradually, this triangle became deeply ingrained in people's minds; later, it even evolved into purely decorative accents (such as simple stitching) to add character, becoming a classic hallmark of American casual sportswear!
